A simple routine that prevents most equipment problems before they start.
A clean machine isn't just more pleasant to use — it prevents mask leaks, skin irritation, odors, and premature equipment failure. Here's a routine that takes minutes a day.
Daily
Wipe the mask cushion with a damp cloth or CPAP-safe wipe to remove facial oils.
Empty any leftover water from the humidifier chamber (don't let it sit all day).
Weekly
Wash the mask cushion, frame, and headgear in warm water with mild, unscented soap. Rinse thoroughly and air dry out of direct sunlight.
Wash the humidifier water chamber the same way — check for any mineral buildup or discoloration.
Wipe down the tubing exterior; if using non-heated tubing, an occasional interior rinse with warm water helps prevent buildup.
Check the air filter and replace foam filters if visibly dirty or discolored.
Monthly
Replace disposable filters on schedule (check your model's manual — commonly every 2–4 weeks).
Inspect the mask cushion for signs of wear, stretching, or loss of shape — replace if the seal has degraded.
Deep-clean tubing by soaking in a mild vinegar-water solution (1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water), then rinsing thoroughly and air-drying completely before reuse.
Every 3–6 months
Replace tubing, cushions, and reusable filters per manufacturer guidelines — most insurance plans cover these replacements on a set schedule.
Replace the humidifier water chamber if it shows any cracking, cloudiness, or persistent buildup.
Skip the harsh stuff: avoid bleach, alcohol, or scented soaps on any CPAP component — they can degrade silicone and plastic and irritate skin and airways.
